iPhone 18 Series: 10 Leak Updates That Actually Matter

iPhone 18 Series: 10 Leak Updates That Actually Matter

September is creeping up faster than most people realise, and if you’ve been sleeping on the iPhone 18 rumours, now’s a good time to wake up. The lineup — especially the Ultra — is shaping up to be something genuinely worth talking about. Here’s everything we know so far, broken down without the fluff.

1. The Cameras Are Getting Seriously Thick

This one isn’t speculation anymore. Physical dummy models of the 18 Pro and Ultra have already surfaced, and the camera situation is… noticeable. The entire camera plateau, plus the individual bumps, is coming in around 0.65mm thicker than the 17 Pro. That might sound like a tiny number, but in Apple’s design world, that’s a loud statement.

What does it mean practically? Variable aperture on the main camera is looking more and more real, and the telephoto lens is expected to be larger, letting in more light with a wider aperture. Apple doesn’t bulk up the hardware for no reason. Something meaningful is coming.

2. Four Colours, Including One People Have Wanted Forever

The 18 Pro colour lineup is actually exciting this year — which isn’t something you can say every year.

  • Light Blue (Pantone 2121) — think sky blue MacBook Air vibes
  • Dark Gray (Pantone 426C) — basically black, almost Space Black territory
  • Silver — still here, still reliable
  • Dark Cherry (Pantone 6076) — a deep wine red that honestly looks stunning

That dark cherry is the one people have been asking Apple to make for years. Looks like someone finally listened.

3. The Dynamic Island Is Shrinking

It’s confirmed now from multiple sources — the Dynamic Island is getting smaller on the 18 Pro. The new width is coming in at around 14.98mm, down from the current 20.06mm. That’s a pretty significant reduction visually, and it’ll make the display feel a bit more open and modern.

From the front, this is probably the only design change you’ll visibly notice on the Pro compared to the 17 Pro. But honestly, it’s one of those things that sounds small until you’re actually staring at your phone every day.

4. The Ultra Foldable — First Real Look

The iPhone Ultra dummy models are out, and there are some genuinely interesting things going on here. When folded, the front display is roughly the same width as the 17 Pro Max — but noticeably shorter, which should make one-handed use a lot more comfortable than you’d expect from a foldable.

Unfold it, and the display is again about the same width as the Pro Max but roughly 56.9% taller. Widescreen content, gaming, anything 16:9 — it’s going to look incredible on that screen. And the camera bump is massive. Thicker than even the iPhone Air’s bump, which tells you Apple isn’t cutting corners on the main and ultrawide cameras here.

5. Three Things Missing From the Ultra

Here’s where it gets complicated. For all the excitement around the Ultra, there are three things that might genuinely bother people:

No MagSafe. That’s a big deal for anyone deep in the MagSafe ecosystem.

No telephoto camera. This one’s going to sting for camera enthusiasts. The Ultra has the bulk and presumably the hardware ambition — but no zoom lens. Anyone who relies on telephoto for portraits, wildlife, or just general photography might find it hard to justify switching from a Pro Max.

No Action Button. The volume buttons, power button, and camera control are all there — but the Action Button is gone. Maybe Apple folds that functionality into the camera control somehow. Or maybe it’s just… gone.

6. Apple Is Splitting the iPhone Launch Into Two Waves

This is genuinely new territory for Apple. The iPhone Air 2, base iPhone 18, and budget 18E are all reportedly getting pushed to spring 2027. The fall September launch will only include three models — the 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, and Ultra.

Why? A couple of reasons. It smooths out chip supply pressure across the year instead of cramming everything into one quarter. But it also means the only iPhones you can buy right away in fall are the three most expensive ones — which conveniently drives Apple’s average selling price way up during the busiest shopping season. Smart move from a business angle, even if it’s a little frustrating for people who wanted the base model first.

7. The Base iPhone 18 Gets 12GB of RAM

Nobody saw this coming. The base iPhone 18 was widely expected to stay at 8GB RAM, same as now. Instead, it’s reportedly jumping to 12GB — which puts it firmly in flagship territory in terms of raw memory. Apple Intelligence, on-device AI features, multitasking — all of it stands to benefit significantly from that bump.

For what’s supposed to be the “entry-level” iPhone, 12GB RAM is genuinely impressive.

8. But Apple Is Cutting Costs Elsewhere to Keep the Price

Here’s the catch. To keep the iPhone 18 at $800, Apple is reportedly downgrading a couple of components. According to Fixed Focus Digital, the display panel might drop to an M12 Plus — not as good as what’s in current Pro models, and Apple definitely won’t advertise that. There’s also talk of the A20 chip getting a four-core GPU bin instead of the five-core bin in the A19.

The thing is, Apple’s betting that most people won’t notice or won’t care. And given how good their software optimization is, they might be right. It’s also a calculated competitive move — other brands don’t have the margins to absorb rising memory and storage costs the same way Apple does.

9. iPhone Air 2 Is Getting Dual Cameras (Finally)

The original iPhone Air took a lot of heat for having a single rear camera. Apple heard it. The Air 2 is reportedly coming with dual cameras — similar to the Ultra’s setup. Whether it’ll also fix the single-speaker situation (which is genuinely bad on the current Air) remains to be seen, but at least the camera complaint is being addressed.

The spring 2027 delay is partly because Apple wanted time to actually improve the things people hated about the first version. If that means a meaningfully better product, the wait might be worth it.

10. The iPhone 18E Is Finally Getting a Dynamic Island

The budget 18E is ditching the notch. It’s making the jump to a Dynamic Island, which should be a meaningful refresh for that model and likely a real sales driver. The island it gets will reportedly be the older, larger version — not the new smaller one on the Pros — but still, it’s a significant upgrade over a notch.

Thicker bezels are expected too, which helps Apple visually differentiate the 18E from the pricier models. Reasonable trade-off at that price point.

That’s the full picture as of right now. The iPhone 18 Pro’s camera upgrades and color options are the highlights for most people, the Ultra is fascinating but comes with real compromises, and the split launch strategy is something that’ll ripple through how people buy iPhones going forward. A lot can still change between now and September — but this is shaping up to be one of the more interesting iPhone years in a while.
